Extreme Fun!

At the end of our 3 week unit, you won't believe how far you have come.  Once everyone is skating confidently, we will be able to play some really fun games.  A Limbo station will be set up in the middle of the rink challenging your balance as you go under the Limbo bar.

We will play the Chase game which will be set up like a 4oo meter relay out on the track but with skates!  Lastly, the whole class will compete in the Number Game as you chose a numbered corner of the gym when the music stops and we see which number choice lasts until the end for a prize.  Be ready for a *FUN* week!

Now It's Time for Some Fun!

After a couple of weeks learning how to skate we will start adding some fun to class.  The first thing you will see is the addition of some hoop tunnels at the corners of the gym to skate under.  Take your time at first, slow down and duck your head making sure your helmet clears the hoop.

Let's Get It Started!

If skating is new to you, there are some things that can help you get started.  The first and most important is to have a good attitude.  Learning something new is hard and saying "I can't do this" and not giving it a try will leave you stuck on the bleachers.   Here in the gym we can help you get started by getting used to the roll of skates on carpet.  The carpet will slow the wheels down so you can learn to balance.

Everyone falls when they are learning, so it's important to learn how to get back up.  You will get on your hands and knees and put one foot up on the skate in front of you.  Then you will put your hands on that knee and push yourself up to a stand.  Remember...everyone can learn how to skate if you have a good attitude and try your best.

First Things First!

Learning a new skill can be challenging and scary --but also very fun.  When you first put your feet on wheels, balance can be hard. The first day you may want to use one or two of the foam broomsticks I will have out.  They can make you feel a little bit more steady when you first stand up.  After the first few days I will be putting the broomsticks away so your balance will keep improving.  Some of us will be using a walker to steady ourselves and keep safe while we learn to balance.  Everyone is special and different and we are all going to learn at our own pace.  What really matters is a GOOD ATTITUDE!

Skating is Good for Your Health!

Sure, roller skating is fun...but did you know it is good for your health, too?  During this unit you can expect to gain coordination and balance that you can't achieve without wheels on your feet.  Your heart will get healthier and stronger because skating is hard work.  Think about all the muscles in your legs and back that will have to work hard and get stronger because you will be skating.   I'll be playing some fun music and you will be able to try some dance moves while skating which is a great mood booster!  Skating!  Good for your body and mind!

Roller Skating: Helmets!

First things first!  Before we start our Roller Skating Unit we have to make sure we are being safe with helmets.  If you have a helmet at home, you may bring it to school and it will be stored in the gym for your PE days.  If you do not own a helmet you will be able to sign one out from the school.  This year we were able to secure helmets through Children's Hospital in Buffalo, NY!  We are so thankful!
